Trump posted a map of North America on social media under the name "United States," and separately a map of New Mexico crossing out "Mexico" to write "America" underneath. Sheinbaum responded that "Mexico is not and will not be a colony or protectorate of any country." It's not an isolated gesture: in January 2025 Trump already officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico, on August 27, 2026 he signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America," and on September 2 he proposed the same for the Strait of Hormuz. A legal change to the state's actual name (which would require action by the New Mexico legislature and the U.S. Congress) does not resolve Yes, only a federal-use directive, as happened with the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario. Resolves No if no such formal action occurs before that date.
