Does the U.S. Order an Official Renaming of New Mexico Before 2027?

Market context

Trump posted a map of North America on social media under the name "United States," and separately a map of New Mexico crossing out "Mexico" to write "America" underneath. Sheinbaum responded that "Mexico is not and will not be a colony or protectorate of any country." It's not an isolated gesture: in January 2025 Trump already officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico, on August 27, 2026 he signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America," and on September 2 he proposed the same for the Strait of Hormuz. New Mexico is a state, not a geographic feature: legally renaming it would require its legislature and Congress, nearly impossible. But a federal directive for U.S. agencies to use a different name (the same mechanism used for the Gulf of Mexico) is within what Trump can order alone. Does he do it before the end of 2026?

Resolution criteria

• How it resolvesResolves Yes if the U.S. government (the President via executive order, or a federal agency such as the Board on Geographic Names / U.S. Geological Survey via official directive) issues a formal action for federal agencies to use a name other than "New Mexico" to refer to that state, on or before December 31, 2026, 23:59 Eastern Time (ET) (04:59:00 UTC on January 1, 2027). It must be a published official document (executive order, presidential memorandum, or the relevant agency's resolution), not a social media post, informal comment, or proposal without formal action. A legal change to the state's actual name (which would require action by the New Mexico legislature and the U.S. Congress) does not resolve Yes, only a federal-use directive, as happened with the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario. Resolves No if no such formal action occurs before that date.
